About us

Queen Mary University of London is one of the UK’s leading research-focused higher education institutions. We have over 32,000 students on degree programmes, close to 4,500 members of staff and an annual turnover of over £535m.

We teach and research across a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, law, medicine and dentistry, and science and engineering. We are based in a creative and culturally diverse area of east London and our site in Mile End is one of the largest self-contained residential campuses in the capital.

Russell Group institution

Queen Mary is one of 24 leading UK universities represented by the Russell Group, that are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience, excellent graduate employability and unrivalled links with business and the public sector. We offer research-led education and attract local, national and international students from diverse backgrounds currently under-represented at universities like ours. Queen Mary was recognised as the most inclusive Russell Group university in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021. The authors noted: “Queen Mary continues to prove that social inclusion and academic success are not mutually exclusive.”

High-quality learning experience

The Queen Mary Education Approach is firmly rooted in our 2030 strategy, and sets out our ambition to deliver “an outstanding, inclusive, world-class education and student experience, co-created with our diverse student body, enhanced by our world-leading research and latest technological developments”
We have made significant investments to support this and further develop our world-class digital and physical infrastructures for education and research, with a total capital expenditure of £56m in 2021/22. We invested over £16m into improvement works to our Mile End Library which were completed in April 2023. These include a redesigned ground floor study space, a two-story extension and a new Archives Reading Room.

A truly global university

Queen Mary is a truly global university with students, staff and alumni from over 170 countries. Ranked 19th in the world for international outlook and 16th in the UK (The Times Higher Education 2023) our home is in London, but with sites in Paris and Malta, and over 5,000 students studying on our joint programmes with partners in China, our reach extends far beyond the UK capital.

Degree Apprenticeships

Queen Mary was one of the first Higher Education Institutions in the UK to invest in and deliver Degree Apprenticeships. These programmes bring together the very best of higher and vocational education, ensuring students are equipped with skills for the future.

London City Institute of Technology

Opened in 2022, The London City Institute of Technology is a collaboration between Queen Mary University of London, Newham College and a wide range of employers such as Goldman Sachs, PwC and the NHS. It specialises in delivering higher technical education and apprenticeships with a focus on STEM subjects, such as engineering, digital and construction.

With £28m in funding from the Department for Education and the Greater London Authority, the Institute plays a vital role in delivering the technical skills that employers need to survive, and to create secure, high-quality jobs.

Investing in the future

Queen Mary continues to increase its investment in improvements to its infrastructure with total infrastructure investment forecast to be £89m in 2022/23 and budgeted at £134m in 2023/24. In the period up to 2030, we anticipate an investment of c. £950m in our estate and IT, including improvements to several sites across our campuses which will enable our continued expansion of teaching and research activity. Some of the highlights within our forward-looking plans include:

  • The newly built School of Business and Management on our Mile End campus
  • Works to develop a state-of-the-art life sciences centre in Whitechapel
  • Refurbishment and improvement works in our Queens’ Building

This follows on from completed projects in recent years which have included expansion and improvement works to our library site at Mile End, fit out works at Department W (our newly established building situated between our Whitechapel and Mile End hubs), and our newly built London City Institute of Technology building which was developed in partnership with Newham College.
